Guizhou Minzu University was founded on May 17, 1951 under the jurisdiction of the People’s Government of Guizhou Province. As one of the first minorities-oriented universities in China, it is a key provincial higher education institute sponsored jointly by the People’s Government of Guizhou Province and the State Commission for Nationalities. Guizhou Minzu University received a straight-A score in the Undergraduate Level Teaching Appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education, and it is a higher education institute who admitted overseas students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship.

The university is located in Huaxi District of Guiyang City, a scenic spot with green mountains and bright waters renowned as “Pearl of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau”. The campus of Dong Jiayan is across from a national wet land park which covers an area of 883,100㎡, another campus in university town covers 1,884,000㎡, the campus building is 730,000㎡in size. There is a collection of 2,140,000 printed publications, 1,030,000 e-books, 27TB digital resources and 15,000 electronic journals in the University Library.

Guizhou Minzu University has a well-structured and well-developed staff. There are 1,479 staff on the payroll, of whom 1073 people are full-time teachers. Of the faculty, 164 have the title of professor (9 with the second grade), 515 vice professors; of the faculty 281 teachers have received PhD degree and 590 teachers have received master degree. There are also 431 doctoral and research supervisors. Among them, there are nearly 100 people such as the leading talents in “ten thousand talent” program, and the candidates in "One-hundred plus One-thousand plus Ten-thousand Talent Project”, the young experts who made outstanding contribution, the talents from “Four Batches”, experts enjoyed the special allowance from the State Council, the new century technological talents from Ministry of Education, the core professionals in Guizhou Province, and the “Qian Ling Scholars” from Guizhou philosophy and social science academy and so on.

The university enrolls students from the whole nation. At present the full-time students reaches over 19,208, and there are 9,048 bachelors in an independent college of the joint school. Since the founding of the university 100,000 plus talents of various disciplines have been cultivated, some of them have become the administrators of various professional fields.

Through the practice and development over 65 years, the university has developed coordinately into a comprehensive higher education institute which involves 10 academic categories, namely, economics, law, pedagogy, liberal arts, history, sciences, fine arts, engineering, management and medical science. There are 21 colleges: College of Literature, College of Business, College of Law, College of Ethnography and Sociology, College of Ethnical Culture and Cognitive Science, College of Physical & Health Education, College of Foreign Languages, College of Media, College of Music and Dance, College of Fine Arts, College of Information Engineering, College of Mechatronic Engineering, College of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, College of Material Science and Engineering, College of Architecture & Engineering, College of Tourism and Steward, College of Marx – Leninism, College of Preparatory Education and College of Adult-Education. There are two educational organizations: Graduate College and College of International Education. The university possesses well constructed computer network center, libraries, and stadiums.

The university has 78 undergraduate majors, 9 master degrees with first-class disciplines, 51 master degrees with second-class disciplines, 5 professional master projects, 1 doctoral degree first-class discipline, 5 postgraduate workstations. On the national construction platform, the university has 4 national characteristic majors, 3 national professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 1 outstanding national video open course. There are also 2 key disciplines, 3 research bases of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 5 provincial special disciplines, 6 provincial key disciplines, 8 provincial special majors and 7 provincial professional comprehensive reform pilots, 2 provincial key labs, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 Collaborative innovation centers, 3 humanities and social science research bases, 4 provincial graduate education and innovation bases, 2 provincial talents’ cultivation bases; 5 provincial teaching innovation teams and 1 provincial talents team of science and technology innovation.

The university has attached great importance to scientific research. There are lots of institutes such as the research institute of society construction and anti-poverty, the research institute of the public policies in ethnic areas, GuiZhou Institute for National Cultures and Arts, GuiZhou Mountain Tourism and Ethnic Economy Institute, South-west YeLang Culture Research Institute, South-west Nuo Culture Research Institute, Shui Characters’ Research Institute, Law Research Institute, Guizhou National Science Research Institute, Guizhou Long-dwelling Ethnic Culture Research Institute, National Architectural Design and Research Institute, Guizhou Maotai Wine Culture Research Institute and the “Colorful Guizhou” Collaborative Innovation Center, National Culture Industry Development Research Center, National Culture Big Data Industry Development Research Center, Karst Wetland Ecology Research Center. Besides, 9 provincial ethnological association and research institutes were affiliated to the university, such as Guizhou National Culture Association, Guizhou Miao Association, Guizhou Bu Yi Association, Guizhou Dong Association, Guizhou Yi Association, Guizhou Tujia Association, Guizhou Ge Lao Association, Guizhou Shui Association, Guizhou Hui Association, which formed into strong research matrix between national folk culture and ethnic issues.

Over the past 5 years the teachers and students have presided over or participated in nearly 819 provincial and ministerial research projects, including 86 national projects, 2 key bidding projects of national philosophy and social science research and 1 major philosophy and social science research project in the Ministry of Education. The university faculty has received 78 awards and published 5,120 academic papers in journals above the provincial rank, of which over 1,288 of these essays are indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP and appear in key national journals, and published 206 books.

At present, the university has set up the Guizhou Minority Official Training Base, Guizhou Ethnic Minority Talents’ Training Base, Guizhou Ethnic Minority Preparatory Education Base, Guizhou Ethnic Minority Bilingual Teaching Base, Guizhou National Physical Teaching Base, Guizhou Long-dewelling Minority Culture Research Base, Legal System and the development of National Areas Research Base, Guizhou National Culture Ecology Research Base, and the university has become a significant think tank of Guizhou economic and social development. The university actively develops and explores the ways of opening education in terms of university-university, university-enterprise, university-locality, university-institute and international collaborative education system, which give the driving force to the development of the university and provide strong support for the better service of the social and economic development of ethnic minority and national areas.

The university attaches great attention to international education and academic exchange. The university has built collaborative relationship with universities in America, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Holland and Malaysia as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan. At present, there are about 348 students on the enrollment from 19 countries, such as America, Belgium, Korea, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and other African countries. The university has always been highly valued and kindly cared by national leaders, such as the Heads of the State Ministries, CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee and Provincial People’s Government. When the former chairman Jiang Zemin came to visit, he inscribed the name of our university, and on our university’s 50^thbirthday, he came again and inscribed for our university and other national universities that “we should put great efforts to the development of the national education, and then promote the co-development of all ethnic groups”; the former chairman Hu Jintao, during his tenure as Secretary of Guizhou provincial party committee, planted trees with all the faculty and students on our university campus.

With 65 years of construction and development, Guizhou Minzu University has become Guizhou Training Base of Minority Talents, the Science and Technology Research Base, a tie of minority culture heritage, a research centre of minority talents, a cultivation base for national unity, and a think tank for the development of minority areas. The university comprehensively implements the party and the state's education policy and continuously adheres to serving for ethnic minority and national areas (especially in Guizhou ethnic minorities and national areas), and serving for school mission of national special needs. The university always develops the spirit of “striving for prosperity and working with stamina and diligence”, consolidates foundation, optimizes the structure, and highlights features, which promotes the collaborative development of university size, structure, quality and profits. The university will further enhance the teaching quality and the schooling level, and enforce its schooling capability and comprehensive competitiveness, and will make efforts to construct the first-class minority university in China.
